SA Law Context
The Bible's treatment of women is often misrepresented — either by those who use selected passages to justify degradation, or by critics who overlook how radically Jesus and Paul elevated women in their cultural context. Scripture's consistent witness is that women bear the image of God equally with men, are co-heirs of grace, and are called to full human dignity.
What Scripture Says
Key Bible Verses
Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Both male and female equally bear the image of God — the imago Dei. This is the theological foundation for women's dignity. It was stated before the Fall, before any cultural hierarchy, before any law. It is the original and enduring statement about what it means to be a woman: an image-bearer of God.
Proverbs 31:25–26 (NIV)
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.”
The "virtuous woman" of Proverbs 31 is not defined by her appearance or her submission to male authority — she is defined by her strength, dignity, wisdom, and the instruction that is on her tongue. She is an economic actor, a community figure, and a person worthy of praise from those who know her.
Galatians 3:28 (NIV)
“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Paul's declaration removes gender as a determining factor in spiritual and moral standing. The categories that the ancient world used to rank people — including male/female — are declared irrelevant before God. This does not erase difference, but it absolutely equalises worth and dignity.
Luke 8:1–3 (NIV)
“After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary Magdalene... Joanna... Susanna; and many others.”
Jesus travelled with a group of women disciples — something utterly unconventional in first-century Jewish culture. He taught women, healed women, and appeared first to women after his resurrection. His treatment of women was consistently dignifying in a culture that did not treat them as full persons.
1 Peter 3:7 (NIV)
“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life.”
"Heirs with you" — equal heirs of grace. A wife is not a servant, not a subordinate in God's family — she is a co-heir. Her dignity does not depend on a husband's choice to respect her. She possesses it by virtue of who God says she is.
Romans 16:1–3 (NIV)
“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae... She has been the benefactor of many people, including me. Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus.”
Paul describes Phoebe as a deacon (not "deaconess"), a "benefactor" (prostatis — a word used for patrons and leaders), and greets Priscilla as a "co-worker." In the same chapter he greets at least 9 women by name as significant contributors to the early church. Women as leaders, teachers, and co-workers is not a modern innovation — it is Pauline.
In South African Constitutional Law
Section 9 of the Constitution explicitly prohibits unfair discrimination on the basis of gender, sex, and pregnancy. Section 12 guarantees every person freedom and security of their person — including freedom from all forms of violence. The Employment Equity Act, the Domestic Violence Act, and the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act all give legal substance to the constitutional protection of women's dignity. The South African Human Rights Commission (011 877 3600) handles complaints about violations of women's rights.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Bible teach that women are inferior to men?
No. The Bible teaches that women are equal image-bearers of God (Genesis 1:27), co-heirs of grace (1 Peter 3:7), and that in Christ the male/female hierarchy is not the determining reality (Galatians 3:28). Passages about submission in marriage (Ephesians 5) are often read in isolation without their context — which calls for mutual submission of all believers to each other (Ephesians 5:21) and models the husband's authority on Christ's self-giving service, not domination.
Can a woman be a church leader according to the Bible?
Deborah was a judge of Israel. Miriam was a prophet and led worship. Huldah was a prophet consulted by the king and priests. Phoebe was a deacon. Priscilla taught Apollos. These are not minor figures — they exercised significant leadership. There is genuine theological debate about specific texts (1 Timothy 2:12, 1 Corinthians 14:34), but the overall biblical witness affirms women in significant spiritual roles.
My employer treats women differently from men in our workplace. What can I do?
Gender-based pay discrimination and unequal treatment are prohibited under Section 6(4) of the Employment Equity Act. You can refer the matter to the Commission for Employment Equity or to the CCMA. Document the differences — pay slips, policies, treatment patterns. Legal Aid SA (0800 110 110) can advise you on your options.
