Terms, Cancellation & Refund Policy

Last updated: June 2026  ·  The Advocate — Know Your Rights. Know Your Word.

The Advocate is operated by Melamu Tech Ventures, based in South Africa. This page sets out our subscription terms, how to cancel, and our refund policy in plain language.

Important: Not legal advice

The Advocate is a legal rights education and self-advocacy training platform. It is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Nothing on this platform — including scenario content, AI-generated responses, rights summaries, or any other material — constitutes legal advice or creates a lawyer-client relationship. The information provided is for general educational purposes only and may not reflect the most recent legal developments or apply to your specific situation.

For advice about your specific legal situation, consult a qualified legal practitioner. If you cannot afford one, contact Legal Aid South Africa on 0800 110 110 (free, Monday–Friday).

1. What you're paying for

The Advocate is a self-advocacy training platform. Free accounts get limited access to a small set of scenarios. A paid subscription unlocks full access to all law domains and scenarios for your country, for as long as your subscription is active.

2. Cancellation

You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings, or by emailing us at the address below. Cancellation stops future billing — it takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and you keep full access until then. We do not charge cancellation penalties.

3. Refunds

Annual plans: If you're not satisfied, you can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked. Email us within that window and we'll process it.

Monthly plans: Monthly payments are not normally refunded once processed, since you've had access to the full month of content, except where required by applicable law. Cancelling simply stops the next month's charge.

Facilitator accounts: Billed monthly per seat. The same monthly policy applies — cancelling stops future billing and the current billing period is not normally refunded, except where required by applicable law.

To request a refund, email support@theadvocate.co.za with your account email and the reason for the request. We aim to process eligible refunds within 5 business days.

4. Payment processing

New payments are processed securely by Paddle (most supported countries) or PayFast (South Africa and Zimbabwe). We never see or store your card details. Historical subscriptions created through Paystack remain recorded as legacy subscriptions. Recurring billing and provider-side cancellation are handled by the relevant payment processor.

5. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and notify registered subscribers by email.
