Frequently Asked Questions

Can a school refuse my child for not speaking the school's language of instruction in Northern Cape?
Schools may have a language policy, but refusal of admission solely on language grounds is unlawful if it effectively discriminates unfairly. Language policies must be applied consistently and cannot exclude learners from a basic education.
Can a school refuse admission because I cannot pay school fees in Northern Cape?
No. Public schools must admit all learners and may not make admission conditional on payment of fees. Qualifying learners may apply for school fees exemption.
What if there are no places available at my preferred school in Northern Cape?
The Department of Education must provide an alternative placement. The preferred school is not always guaranteed, but a child cannot be left without a school placement.
