  1. Step 1. Visit your nearest Home Affairs office in KwaZulu-Natal with your original South African ID, birth certificate, and proof of address.

  2. Step 2. Complete Form DHA-9 (Change of First Names) or Form DHA-29 (Change of Surname). Forms are available at the office.

  3. Step 3. Pay the prescribed fee (currently R75 for first name change; surname changes may differ).

  4. Step 4. For a first name change, the new name will be noted on your ID. You may need to apply for a new Smart ID Card with the changed name.

  5. Step 5. For gender-affirming name changes under the Alteration of Sex Description Act, medical documentation from your treating doctor or psychologist is required.

  6. Step 6. After the change, update your name with SARS, your bank, SASSA (if applicable), your employer, and the deeds registry if you own property.
