A consumer is being pressured by a scammer to approve a fraudulent transaction under the guise of bank security.

What They Said

“I am hanging up now and calling the bank back on their official fraud line to verify this.”
The user is being pressured by a caller claiming to be from the bank's fraud department. By stating this, the user asserts control over their data security, preventing the scammer from manipulating them into authorizing a fraudulent transaction.

False Urgency / Appeal to Fear

The scammer creates a false sense of crisis to bypass the user's critical thinking. Under POPIA, banks are required to maintain secure systems that do not rely on customers approving suspicious in-app notifications to 'stop' fraud. Legitimate banks have internal mechanisms to freeze accounts without requiring customer-initiated app approvals.

Your Legal Foundation

Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) 4 of 2013
“A responsible party must secure the integrity and confidentiality of personal information in its possession or under its control in order to prevent loss of, damage to or unauthorised destruction of personal information and unlawful access to or processing of personal information.”
This section mandates that banks must protect your data; if a caller is using your data to manipulate you into authorizing a transaction, they are violating the security protocols the bank is legally obligated to uphold.
