Disability Grant

The SASSA disability grant provides monthly income to South African adults who are permanently or temporarily unable to work due to a physical or mental disability. Applications are made at any SASSA office and rejections can be appealed within 90 days.

Legal Definition

A social grant payable under the Social Assistance Act 13 of 2004 to a South African citizen or permanent resident aged 18–59 who is, owing to a physical or mental disability, unfit to work and is not cared for in a state institution. The disability must be confirmed by a SASSA-approved medical officer. The grant is means-tested — both the applicant's income and assets (and those of a spouse) are assessed. The grant is issued for a fixed period (usually 1–2 years for temporary disability, or indefinitely for permanent disability) and is subject to reassessment. Rejections can be appealed to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) within 90 days.

📖 Constitutional / Statutory Basis: Section 27(1)(c) — the right to social security, including social assistance; Social Assistance Act 13 of 2004 ss9 and 18

Practical Example

A person with a debilitating spinal injury that prevents all employment applies for the disability grant at their nearest SASSA office. They submit a medical report from their doctor. SASSA refers them to a SASSA-approved medical officer who confirms permanent disability, and the grant is approved.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the disability grant and the care dependency grant?
The disability grant is for the person with the disability themselves (adults 18–59 who cannot work). The care dependency grant is for parents or guardians of children with severe disabilities who require full-time care — paid to the caregiver, not the child.
Can a person receiving a disability grant also work part-time?
The grant is means-tested. If you earn income while on the grant, your income is factored into the means test at reassessment. Significant regular income can reduce or eliminate eligibility. Report any change in income to SASSA.
What happens when I turn 60 — does the disability grant end?
At age 60 you automatically become eligible for the old age grant. SASSA should automatically convert your disability grant to the old age grant. If they do not, report to the nearest SASSA office to request the conversion.
