UIF Benefits vs Social Grants
When you lose income in South Africa, you may be eligible for UIF benefits (if you were previously employed and contributed to UIF) or SASSA social grants (for those who qualify based on means testing and specific categories). Understanding both prevents you from missing out.
UIF Benefits
Monthly benefit payments from the Unemployment Insurance Fund to workers who have contributed to UIF and who have become unemployed, ill, pregnant, or adopted a child.
When it applies: Claim UIF when you are retrenched, dismissed, your fixed-term contract ends, you are ill for more than 14 days, or you take maternity/parental leave.
Law: Unemployment Insurance Act 63 of 2001; Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act 4 of 2002.
Example: A retrenched factory worker claims UIF benefits while looking for new employment.
SASSA Social Grant
A monthly payment from the South African Social Security Agency to people in specific categories of need — elderly, disabled, child-supporting, or caregiving.
When it applies: Apply for a social grant if you are 60+ (Old Age Grant), have a disability (Disability Grant), care for a child (Child Support Grant), or are a primary caregiver for an older/disabled person (Care Dependency or Foster Child Grant).
Law: Social Assistance Act 13 of 2004.
Example: A 63-year-old woman with no income applies for the Old Age Grant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I receive UIF and a social grant at the same time in South Africa?
Potentially yes — they are separate schemes. However, UIF income counts as income for means-tested grants. Receiving UIF may disqualify you from income-based grants while you are receiving it.
What happens to my UIF if I emigrate or leave South Africa permanently?
Emigrants (those who have formally emigrated) can withdraw their UIF in a lump sum. Non-citizens who leave permanently can also claim their UIF contributions back under certain conditions.
Does domestic workers qualify for UIF in South Africa?
Yes. Since 2003, domestic workers who work more than 24 hours per month must be registered for UIF. Employers are legally obligated to pay both the employer's and employee's contributions.
